About Kraken

Kraken, legally named Payward, Inc., is a US-based cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2011. It appears in this directory of US crypto firms, and it is credited as the earliest crypto company to secure a banking license. Beyond digital assets, the exchange offers trading in stocks, futures and ETFs in most US states. Its brokerage activity runs through Kraken Securities LLC, a FINRA and SIPC member that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Payward. In 2025 the company opened tokenized equity trading to customers outside the US. That year it recorded $207 billion in quarterly trading volume, placing it fourteenth globally among crypto exchanges by size. Its activity spans cryptocurrency markets as well as securities. Kraken's listed products include margin trading, staking and self-custody options, though availability depends on eligibility and geographic restrictions. Its equities and derivatives offerings place it alongside other financial services providers.
